There are two schools of thought regarding the teaching of the "mysteries". The first believes the gospel should be kept simple and the mysteries and sensational topics be avoided.
Current Church leaders contradict each other on the mysteries. Joseph Smith publicly taught the mysteries and believed them to be essential. Jesus Christ and Joseph Smith were killed for revealing the mysteries. This principle holds today.
